Through the course of their work, attorneys, social workers, therapists, medical providers, and other social service professionals are exposed to the stories, images, experiences, and emotions of people who have faced trauma and adversity. Participants will learn about vicarious trauma, and related concepts of compassion fatigue and burnout, and identify self-care strategies and supports that help maintain professional competency and enhance personal well-being.
 
Learning Objectives:
  • Define trauma exposure response and related concepts of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burn-out and analyze how these conditions impact professional competency
  • Utilize information about trauma exposure response and related conditions to promote self-awareness by identifying triggers, symptoms, and signs of distress.
  • Discuss ethical principles and values defined in the PA Rules of Professional Conduct and policy statements regarding self-care, competency, and integrity.
  • View self-care as an integral part of professional ethics and practice supportive self-care strategies to help professionals manage job stress and secondary traumatization.
  • Describe how organizational dynamics and systemic factors influence professionals’ trauma exposure levels and responses, and identify policies and practices that support professionals as they confront trauma in their work.
